This
was just the best fun to work on. The DIY team, marshalled by host Nick
Knowles, are one big dysfunctional family with every affliction
imaginable.
A
typical day’s filming felt like a surreal dream spent with a group of
people suffering collectively from Tourette’s Syndrome, Attention
Deficit Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder all at the same time.
It’s
actually a tough schedule where the DIY team set themselves the task of
performing what would normally take three months in five days to remodel
or rescue a DIY disaster. And they do this every week for months.
They
are all genuinely funny people and the chemistry between them is great to
film. Nick is a very shrewd rather lovely man who is so far ahead of the
game he sets up situations in a very comical and original way.
The
others insult him relentlessly and the conversations which don’t make it
into the show deserve their own outtakes DVD!
On
day one of my first day’s filming, we had to knock a wall down which
escalated into virtually the entire back of the house.
By
the end of the week, the wall was back and it had the most spectacular
fold out floor to ceiling window built into it.
I
have never laughed so much in my life. The format has been around for
seven years now and unlike defunct shows like Changing Rooms has still got
legs.
DIY
SOS’s new producer Simon Knight should be mentioned here as he is a
clever, charming bloke and hopefully will be able to move the format on
and up in the same way that Top Gear stepped up a notch when a lot of
people thought it had nowhere left to go.
